South African Linguist's Library is Donated

A well known Afrikaans linguist, Prof FF Odendal was recently the subject of a large book donation to a South African University. Odenal’s personal book collection was recently donated to the Centre for Text Technology of North West University. Odendal passed away in Cape Town last Saturday.

The personal collection consisted of about 500 books, including handwritten notes, dictionaries, textbooks and signed copies of rare edition books. The donation is being kept at the Centre for Technology at of North West University Potchefstroom Campus. 

Odendal was well known for being the chairman of the Afrikaans Language Commission and a linguist of high stature in South Africa. He also spent 25 years as a lecturer of Afrikaans Linguistics at the former Rand Afrikaans University. 

“His legacy encompassing so many terrains of Afrikaans linguistics is enormous,” said Tom McLachlan, a chairperson at the Language Commission of the South African Academy for Science and Art.
